Business Plan for Sew Cute by Me Designs and Frogs and Fairy Dreams

Rough Draft of Ideas and Business Goals

My goal is to support women in business now, empower more women to follow their dreams, using their God given talents to make a living, to give women the opportunity to support small businesses and make money doing so with "home shows" selling these handmade gifts, and finally to give back to the community in some way.

1. Supporing creative, US small businesses by bringing awareness to their talents and handmade products.

2. Giving women who have creative ideas information on where to start. Supporting these new ideas by selling their products at home shows.

3. Giving women who love to create, but don't have the ideas, a few of my own ideas so they can use those ideas to make a living creating and selling. Supporting these products by selling at home shows.

4. Giving women who do not want to create, the opportunity to make a living supporting women who do by selling products their at home shows.

5. Giving consumers the opportunity to support US small businesses, at the same time giving them an alternative to the mass produced plastic and cheaply made products currently on the market.

6. When I am FINALLY out of the red and making a profit of some sort.... supporting women through a non-profit organization, like Bridgeway Counseling in St. Charles, who offers women in situations of domestic violence shelter and counseling at no cost to them.

Plus... the tooth fairy pillows that started it all. I will continue to create and sell the pillows, eventually teaching others the pattern so that I can get some rest!!

I do not plan to borrow money in order to achieve these goals. I am working hard and using all of my profits to work toward the long term goals of my company.

My "Bailout" Program Ideas..... Buy American.... Spread the Word!!!

My "bailout” program ideas for small businesses in the US.

I have a plan that requires us all to work together. I am suggesting that we take just a minute to stop and really think about what we are doing as participants in this economic disaster. How many of the things in our homes were made in the US? I have been shocked to learn over the past month that most everything I own was made in China or another foreign country. I have piles and piles of plastic toys in this room even as I write. I am suggesting that we all stop for a few minutes and think about what we are purchasing and who we are supporting. Some may say the stuff from China is cheaper and with the economy the way it is right now they can’t really afford to pay more for American made. I would like to suggest that they are wrong. How many shows has Oprah had on the overspending of America and the “throw away” society we have become? Christmas and birthdays have become a joke, with so many gifts surrounding our children… mostly plastic toys from China, that our kids can’t even stop to enjoy themselves. Why are we, as consumers, buying all of this stuff… knowing that within 2 weeks it will be discarded in the corner of the basement and never touched again? I am suggesting we purchase a little less, but make those purchases higher quality and made in the US. Instead of 3 baby dolls, 2 Barbies, tons of doll clothes, accessories, a life size Barbie house, games, and everything else… how about one hand made baby doll that will be cherished forever, a hand made outfit for her, a handmade keepsake and one Barbie doll with a few accessories. I’m not suggesting we stop buying from the big corporations completely… we love Barbie. I’m just suggesting we buy a little less and support some of the hard working, talented craftsmen and toy makers in the US.

I’m changing my ways and doing my best to spread the word! I have built a successful website carrying handmade items made in the US and am now working on starting home shows to spread the word and sell these gorgeous items. I’m not trying to sell you anything… I don’t care if you buy from me or another hardworking stay at home mom. I just want you to buy handmade!!

Sew Cute by Me Designs LLC is asking for your help and support in saving handmade gifts for children...

Sew Cute by Me Designs, LLC is Asking for Your Help and Support in Saving Handmade Gifts for Children… please forward our message on.

I am writing to you in regards to the new Consumer Protection Safety Information Act of 2008 that has already been passed through Congress and was signed into law by President Bush. On the surface, the law promises to keep our children safe from the lead paint and other harmful chemicals on imported toys from China that made their way into our homes in 2007. Unfortunately, what this new law really does, is impose expensive third party testing rules that only large corporations will be able to afford… the same corporations who started this whole mess by not monitoring the quality of items they were importing into this country. Those of us making high quality handmade items for children will be forced to either sell illegally, or shut down. Ironically, in the end we will be left with only plastic imported toys from China available in the market.

According to the new law, every manufacturer, from large corporations and their plastic toys to stay at home moms making handmade baby quilts, is equally required to comply with the third party testing requirement. The problem with the third party testing requirement? The law requires that the “end result” be tested. My products are custom made, and each individual pillow is different from the next. Having each individual pillow tested would be cost prohibitive. Only mass produced products will be able to absorb the costs of testing, eliminating one of a kind, unique gifts for children. My pillows are made from fabric, ribbon, hypoallergenic stuffing and water based, non-toxic paints. None of these materials contain lead. So… if a product is equal to the sum of its parts and each of its parts contain 0 ppm lead, does the end result contain lead? According to the CSPC, we need to put the product through expensive third party testing to figure out this simple equation. 0 + 0 + 0 = ?

I have more faith in the untested handmade items for children created right here in the United States than I ever will in batches of imported plastic toys from China, regardless of how strict our testing requirements are. I purchase my supplies right here in the US, where lead has been banned from paint since 1977. I care about every single child who receives one of my products, and I would never use hazardous materials. Can these large corporations say the same thing?
I intend to fight for my right to use my God given talents to create cherished, handmade gifts for children and to survive during these economic times. Please join me and other artisans in our fight to have this law repealed and rewritten. We don’t want to eliminate testing… we just want it to be fair for all.

I think Dr. Seuss says it best…..…
"This", cried the Mayor, "is your town's darkest hour!
The time for all Whos who have blood that is red
To come to the aid of their country!", he said.
"We've GOT to make noises in greater amounts!

So, open your mouth, lad! For every voice counts!"

If lead is so dangerous, why are we only protecting the under 12 population? Why are we not monitoring what we are importing from foreign countries?

It seems to me that the Consumer Product Safety Commission is either grossly overreacting, or we are all in danger, not just the under 12 population. Is there really lead in EVERYTHING? Clothing, books, magazines, stuffed animals, bedding, crayons and art supplies, fabrics, ribbon, stuffing? If so, who is putting the lead in this stuff and why? Our old stuff is no longer certified as safe (says so right in the law), so should we run through the house and throw it all out, clothing, bedding, books and all? If we are so concerned as to have children’s clothing tested, shouldn’t we be worried about the clothing we adults are wearing? After all, my children do sit on my lap quite often. Is there lead in my clothing, and if so is it going to seep into my children as we snuggle on the sofa? Uh-oh, what about the blanket we snuggle under? The sofa itself? Hmmm… this is starting to get complicated. If lead is so highly toxic and is surrounding us, shouldn’t we have been educated on this previously? If the blanket my children and I are snuggling with does contain lead, does it seep straight into our bodies through the fibers, or do we have to ingest the blanket in order to be harmed? Where are the studies and statistics on this and how am I supposed to protect my family from this danger without being educated about it first? It’s all starting a little crazy to me.

I went to the store yesterday with the intent of purchasing only craft materials made in the US. It was near impossible. To make matters worse, there is no listing of ingredients on most craft materials. How am I supposed to know what is safe and what isn't, and why is everything from China? Why don't we start taxing imports at a higher rate, apply the tax money to the US deficit and "bail out" programs, encourage people to produce and purchase US made items, creating new jobs here in the US, reducing the unemployment rate. I, for one, will be purchasing as many hand made items as possible (even if I have to do it in a back alley as if it were a highly sought after drug), and as little plastic junk from China as my children can survive without.

We need more regulation on these imported items and a labeling system for products containing lead.
